A Study to Assess the Knowledge regarding Sibling Rivalry and its Prevention among Mothers of Children Under-Twelve Years in selected Hospital at Kottayam

ABSTRACT:
A study was conducted to assess the knowledge regarding sibling rivalry and its prevention among mothers of children under-twelve years. The study consists of 30 mothers of children under twelve years of age, were selected by convenience sampling technique. The design used was descriptive research design with quantitative approach. The tool used for the study was, structured knowledge questionnaire. The finding of the study shown that, among 30 samples 11 (36.66%) had an average knowledge and 19 (63.34%) had good knowledge regarding sibling rivalry. Among 30 mothers, 53.3% did not have any previous knowledge regarding sibling rivalry. Majority of the samples (66.6%) were Christians and remaining were Hindu. Among 30 samples, 19 (63.3%) were professionals and only 3.33% sample had primary education. Majority of samples 21 (60%) lives in joint family and the rest 12 (40%) has belong to nuclear family. There is no significant relationship between mothers’ knowledge and selected demographic variables at 0.05% level of significance.

INTRODUCTION:
Nothing is more prefect than a new baby. These adorable little feet and intoxicating new born scent in hand to resist ringing new life into the world momentous occasion, but the arrival of a new baby often causes older sibling to feel displaced, frustrated, angry and even unloved. These feelings are quite normal and will usually resolve if the birth of new baby doesn’t significantly interface with or change the amount of love and affection or attention parent gives to older siblings1.
NEED FOR THE STUDY:
Sibling rivalry is a type of competition or animosity among siblings, whether blood-related or not children feel they are getting unequal amounts of attention. Disciplined and responsiveness from their parents. Children may feel their relationship with their parents is threatened by the arrival of a new baby. In extreme cases, there is over hostility, physical trauma towards the undermining of the sibling, regression with loss of previously acquired skills and tendency to babyish behaviour. There is an increase in oppositional behaviour with the parents, temper tantrums and dysphonia exhibited in the form of anxiety, misery or social withdrawal study was conducted in a hospital at Kochi among 32 mothers revealed that 65.6% had average knowledge, 18.85 had poor knowledge and only 15.65 hd good knowledge regarding sibling revelry and its prevention. So the investigator felt the need to conduct a study to assess the knowledge regarding sibling rivalry and its prevention among mothers of children less than 12 years1.
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
A study to assess the knowledge regarding sibling rivalry and its prevention among mothers of children under-twelve years in selected hospital at Kottayam.
OBJECTIVES:
· To determine the knowledge regarding sibling rivalry and its prevention among mothers
· To find the association between knowledge of mothers with selected demographic variables.
OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS:
Assess:
In this study, it is an activity to estimate the level of knowledge regarding sibling rivalry.
Knowledge:
In this study, knowledge is the level of awareness of knowledge regarding sibling rivalry and its prevention.
Mothers:
In this study the mothers refers to all the mothers who coming to the outpatient and inpatient department in a selected hospital Kottayam.
Sibling revelry:
Sibling rivalry is the jealousy competition and fighting between the mothers and sisters. The problem often states right after birth of the second child.
Hypothesis:
The hypothesis is tested at 0.05 levels of significance.
H1: There is an association between the knowledge ledge of mothers regarding sibling rivalry and its prevention and selected demographic variables.
Assumptions:
· The mothers may have basic knowledge on sibling rivalry
· The children under 12 years are at risk of developing sibling rivalry due to birth of new baby
· The knowledge regarding sibling revelry will help the mothers to limit the occurrence of sibling rivalry.
LIMITATIONS:
1. This study involves only 30 samples.
2. Time was limited to only a short period.
3. Selection of samples was limited to selected hospitals
4. Methodologically the structural questionnaire comprised of only 25 questions. Hence, the assessment of knowledge is limited to particular questions
REVIEW OF LITERATURE:
A study was conducted by John Klandesman Robert Dinoff on sibling rivalry and use of social skill training models. The purpose of study was to assess the usage social skills training on an individual child to enhance the relationship with her siblings and it was measured by the sibling rivalry questionnaire which the mother filled out before the session began and after they were complete. The result did not find a major difference between the present and post-tests. These factors did not seen to be affected by the social skill sessions and therefore did not improve the sibling relationship3.
A descriptive study was conducted by Class M Socker, Rebecca A Burwell on sibling conflict in middle childhood predicts children’s adjustments in their early adolescence. The aim of the study was to find the association between sibling conflict in middle childhood and physiological adjustment during the early adolescence of a child. The study in a sample of boys and 56 girls. The results obtained from the study, highlights the unique significance in the earlier sibling relationship for young adolescent psychological adjustment2.
A study was conducted on the arrival of a rival maternal perception of a toddler’s repressive behaviour” after the birth of a sibling 29 mothers were interviewed about their perception of sibling rivalry and its management after the arrival of their second child. The result revealed that 90% of mothers had moderately adequate knowledge regarding rivalry and its management4.
METHODOLOGY:
Research Design:
The research design selected for the present study was descriptive research design.
Setting of the study:
The study was conducted at the Paediatric Outpatient and Inpatient department of Little Lourdes Mission Hospital, Kidangoor.
Population:
Population selected for this study included the mothers with children of under-five years of age.
Sample size:
The study sample consists of 30 mothers with children below 12 years of age, selected from the inpatient and outpatient department of LLM Hospital, Kidangoor.
Sampling technique:
The sampling technique selected for the present study was convenience sampling technique.
CRITERIA FOR SAMPLE SELECTION:
Inclusion Criteria:
· Mothers who have at least 2 children.
· Who are available during the process of data collection.
Exclusion criteria:
· Who are not interested to participate in the research study.
· Mothers who are Illiterate.
Tool:
In this study, instrument used for the process of data collection was structured knowledge questionnaire on socio-demographic data. It included the information regarding the clients any previous knowledge regarding sibling rivalry religion, education, area of living and the type of family.
Score interpretations:
Based on the scores obtained the samples were graded into three different categories:
· Knowledge level: Poor (0-7), average (8-14), good (15-21)
Results:
· Among 80 samples, 11 (36.66%) had an average knowledge and 19 (63.34%) had good knowledge regarding sibling rivalry.
· Among 30 mothers, 53.3% did not had any previous knowledge regarding sibling rivalry
· Among the total number of samples, 19 (63.3%) mothers were professionals and 1 (3.33%) was house wife.
· Majority of samples, precisely 21 (60%) mothers belongs to joint family and the rest 12 (40%) belongs to nuclear family.
CONCLUSION:
The results obtained from the study reveals that, among the total 30 number of samples who took part in the study, 36.66% had an average knowledge and 63.33% had good knowledge pertaining to sibling rivalry. The study was aimed at assessing the knowledge regarding sibling rivalry and its prevention among mothers of under-twelve-year-old children o in selected hospitals at Kottayam, and it was found that there is no significant relationship between mothers knowledge and selected demographic variables and 0.05% level of significance.
NURSING IMPLICATION:
The study findings have implications in the field of nursing education, nursing administration, nursing practice and nursing research.
Nursing Education:
The research adds better knowledge to the body of knowledge of nursing profession. It can be included in cuessiclam and it helps to expand the knowledge of nursing student. Nurse education can teach staff nurse and nursing student regarding prevention and administration of problem sibling rivalry.
Nursing administration:
Nursing administration should take an initiation to create policies or plans in providing library facilities and adequate number of books for staff nurse and student which will help them to improve the knowledge. Nursing administration can arrange in-service educational programmes on topic sibling rivalry.
Nursing Practice:
Research helps to expand the body of knowledge of the nursing profession. Nurses who are good knowledge and who apply the evident based practice can provide a better intervention of children with sibling rivalry such as stay, calm, quiet an in control, create a cooperation environment, collaborate individuality, plan fun family time, treat kids fairly not equally propose listening method based on scientific knowledge.
Nursing research:
The nursing profession is the sage of development research is the major factors in changing practice education and policy. Nurses who form a important cadre of health professional should take initiative to conduct research regarding various aspects of sibling rivalry. So they can find the defects in present case, expand their knowledge regarding sibling rivalry, apply new knowledge and skills in causing children with sibling rivalry in the light of findings of the study.
It can be also utilized as a reference to research scholars especially the beginners in the field of research
